Starting from today, the different types of decoration will be the topics of every Friday. Today it´s the turn of the Industrial Design, which has been famous among the decorative styles since the 50´s, when it become popular between the young New York artists that were seeking for affordable houses, far from the city centre, and that found their inspiration and homes, as the name of this type of design says itself, in factories located at the periphery. The Industrial Design takes us back to the factories and the large industrial spaces, to spacious rooms and to areas that are not over-loaded.
It is a style that doesn´t match easily with conventional houses, or conventional people, it´s a style made for the nonconformists, the bohemians, the modern and the artists, an unique style made for houses or even old factories that may become homes, that have considerable dimensions. The Industrial leaves the structure and the pipes of the house uncovered, transforming them into part of the decoration, and its walls don´t need painting because naked bricks and concrete have more than enough character for this kind of houses.
They are functional, open concept houses, where the division of spaces is done by decorative elements and furniture. Iron and wood come together to create an incomparable style, one where the lights also have an important role. The huge windows, typical of this houses, with no curtains, let all the necessary light pass through during the day and at night, giant spotlights, reading lamps and retro lights illuminate the key corners.
This kind of decoration is linked to the lofts and certain items with a touch of antique hit in perfectly with it. Recycling is already a habit and industrial houses come alive when an used wooden box or workbench become are used to make a table and a restaurant´s old chairs are updated and put around it. An old sewing machine can be ideal for the entry of our house and painted lockers can become perfect wardrobes.
Industrial style decorated houses won´t be very colourful, as it claims brown, white, black or grey to be the main colours for those houses. Vintage signs and armchairs, desks, stools and any other item rescued from an office of factory will give them a touch of vitality.
Are you too a free spirit or are you more curious about the shabby chic design, or vintage, steam punk, retro, Provence architecture, hippie, sailor…? If you want to discover which one is the style that suits you, we will be waiting for you here and on our Pinterest page every Friday.
